Boating and Watersports

The inviting waters of Smith Mountain Lake offer a multitude of ways to relax and play between the shorelines for both the young and young at heart.

Boating

Recreational boating is at the center of life at Smith Mountain Lake with marinas and boat rental companies offering a wide variety of crafts to accommodate your pursuits. They’ll also provide an orientation that covers boat operation, “rules of the road” and current Virginia watercraft laws.

Personal Watercraft

Commonly referred to as jet skis, wave runners and Sea-Doos, personal watercraft (PWCs) are vessels built for 1-3 people that make it convenient to jet around and explore the lake. Virginia has laws specifically for PWC drivers and riders, so be sure you are familiar with the latest requirements.

Inflatables

Riding toys that can be pulled behind boats is popular among visitors. Often referred to as inflatables, the tubes can be used for heart-pumping fun or as a comfy spot to float and relax. They are readily available for purchase or can be rented at area marinas and retail stores.

Wake Sports

Water skiing, wakeboarding, wake surfing and wake skating are all popular sports at SML. Marinas can help you get started and outfitted with some even offering lessons and designated boat drivers.

Paddleboarding

A standup paddleboard (SUP) is a fun way to play on the lake for people of all ages. It requires basic balance and stability skills, making it a great core workout. A number of marinas and sporting goods stores sell and rent SUPs.

Canoes and Kayaks

For a more leisurely experience, consider bringing a canoe or kayak to paddle around SML’s shorelines. Marinas and retailers also rent them. These crafts are best suited for sunrise or sunset excursions to avoid heavy boat traffic.

Equipment Rental

If you don’t own the gear for your favorite water sport, it’s easy to find and often inexpensive to rent. There are a number of commercial rental companies around the lake for everything from skis, inflatables and water toys, to boats, wakeboards and paddleboards.
